1 Dead, Many Feared Trapped As 6-Storey Building Collapses In Gujarat

The police and fire department officials have rushed to the spot and are carrying out a rescue operation at the site.

A tragic incident occurred in Surat’s Sachin Pali village where a six-storey building collapsed, resulting in one fatality and leaving several individuals feared trapped under the debris. Amidst ongoing heavy rainfall, one woman was successfully rescued, but 15 people sustained injuries. The building, constructed just eight years ago with 30 apartments, only five of which were occupied, now lay in ruins with concrete slabs strewn across the site.

Emergency services, including police and fire departments, swiftly responded, initiating a rescue operation amidst the chaotic scene. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team was also deployed to assist in the efforts. Witnesses recounted the horrifying moment of the collapse and the subsequent rush to aid those caught in the wreckage.

Dr. Saurabh Parghi, Surat’s District Collector, confirmed the ongoing rescue efforts, expressing hope of retrieving the remaining trapped individuals soon. Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot echoed this optimism, noting that voices could still be heard beneath the rubble, indicating ongoing rescue operations.

Authorities pledged to investigate the cause of the building’s collapse, despite its relatively recent construction.

Dr. Saurabh Parghi, Surat’s District Collector, stated, “A six-storey building collapsed. We recently rescued a woman who indicated that four or five more individuals might be trapped. NDRF and SDRF teams are on-site. We are hopeful of rescuing the rest within a few hours.”
