Two Indian-flagged ships carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) are currently navigating the Strait of Hormuz, raising expectations of easing domestic cooking fuel shortages.
The vessels, Jag Vasant and Pine Gas, began their journey from the UAE coast on Monday, moving close to Iran’s Qeshm and Larak islands after receiving clearance for safe passage.
The ships are transporting LPG, widely used across India, and have signalled their Indian ownership through tracking systems as a precaution while navigating the sensitive waterway.
Reports indicate that both vessels are expected to reach the Gulf of Oman by Monday evening, with a full transit typically taking around 14 hours.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil and gas shipments, has faced disruptions since late February following US and Israeli strikes in the region.
Iran has since restricted movement through the waterway, permitting only select vessels, including those from India, to transit after diplomatic negotiations.
Shipping authorities are directing vessels along Iran’s coastline, while the usual route near Oman remains risky, with reports of at least one attack earlier this month.
Jag Vasant loaded LPG from Kuwait, and Pine Gas collected cargo from Ruwais in the UAE. Tensions had stalled both ships in the region before authorities cleared them to proceed.
Earlier this month, two other Indian-flagged LPG carriers successfully completed similar transits, reflecting coordinated efforts to maintain energy supply.
These movements offer reassurance as India monitors fuel logistics amid ongoing geopolitical challenges, ensuring domestic LPG availability continues uninterrupted.
