Punjab has recorded 1,393 farm fires in paddy fields, according to Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla. The police have registered 874 first information reports (FIRs) related to these incidents. In addition to the FIRs, authorities imposed penalties totaling Rs 10.55 lakh in 397 cases. They also made red entries in revenue records for 394 farmers.
Educational Campaign Launched
To combat stubble burning, the Punjab Police, alongside civil administration, has launched an educational campaign for farmers. This initiative highlights the harmful effects of burning stubble and outlines legal actions against offenders. Despite the crackdown, police reported no cases of stubble burning at 471 locations. However, daily diary report (DDR) entries for these cases have been recorded.
Monitoring and Ground Efforts
DGP Gaurav Yadav has appointed Shukla as the police nodal officer to monitor actions against stubble burning. He conducts daily reviews of ongoing cases with senior officers. Police teams are working closely with the administration on the ground. Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police are touring identified stubble-burning hotspots. They hold public awareness meetings with farmer unions to promote cooperation. Shukla urged farmers to refrain from burning crop residue, emphasizing its adverse effects on the environment and public health, particularly for children and the elderly.
