WHO Cancer Agency's Talcum Powder Warning Raises Safety Concerns, Urges Caution

The recent classification of talc as “probably carcinogenic to humans” by the World Health Organization’s cancer agency, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), has sparked significant concern about the safety of talcum powder, according to Dr. Salil Patkar, Consultant-Medical Oncology at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi (Navi Mumbai).

Dr. Patkar emphasized that talcum powder is widely used despite potential risks that many users may not be aware of. He cautioned, “While the evidence isn’t definitive, it’s important to prioritize public health and err on the side of caution.”

He explained, “Talc particles can travel through the reproductive system, potentially causing inflammation and ovarian damage, which may elevate cancer risk.”

The IARC classified talc as “probably carcinogenic to humans” based on limited evidence linking it to ovarian cancer in humans, sufficient evidence from animal studies, and strong mechanistic evidence showing talc’s carcinogenic properties in human cells and experimental models.

Studies cited by the agency indicated a higher incidence of ovarian cancer among women using talcum powder in the perineal region or exposed to talc in occupational settings, such as the pulp and paper industry.

Dr. Patkar stressed the importance of awareness, particularly among women, regarding talcum powder risks. He recommended considering safer alternatives like cornstarch-based powders and urged manufacturers to inform consumers about potential risks and provide safer options.

Given the current evidence, Dr. Patkar advised exercising caution and considering “the potential risks associated with talcum powder use.”
