Sudden Dizziness After Standing? Here’s What Your Body Is Telling You

Standing up quickly after sitting or lying down can sometimes leave you feeling dizzy, light-headed or as though the room is spinning. While this sensation often passes within a few seconds, frequent episodes may point to an underlying health issue that should not be ignored.

This sudden dizziness can occur when blood pressure briefly drops after you change position. Doctors call this condition orthostatic hypotension.

When you stand, gravity causes some blood to move towards your legs. The body normally responds by tightening blood vessels and increasing the heart rate to keep enough blood flowing to the brain. If this response does not happen quickly enough, you may feel dizzy or weak.

Dehydration is one of the common reasons behind this temporary drop in blood pressure. Not drinking enough water, excessive sweating, vomiting or diarrhoea can reduce blood volume and make these symptoms more likely. Standing up quickly, particularly after prolonged sitting or lying down, can also trigger the sensation.

Certain medicines, including some used to treat high blood pressure, heart conditions and depression, may also contribute to postural dizziness. People with conditions such as diabetes, heart problems or disorders affecting the nervous system may experience it more frequently.

Occasional dizziness is often harmless, but repeated episodes, fainting, chest pain, severe headache, blurred vision or difficulty speaking require medical attention. Experts also advise people to stand up slowly, stay adequately hydrated and avoid sudden changes in position.
