Childhood obesity has been identified as a growing health concern, with experts warning of its increasing prevalence and potential long-term impacts. As a significant portion of the population falls within younger age groups, the rise in childhood obesity poses a serious threat that could lead to severe health issues in adulthood.
Addressing the issue, experts emphasize the urgent need for early intervention to manage and prevent obesity. They advocate for initiatives such as school-based education programs and healthy meal initiatives to tackle the problem effectively. While lifestyle changes are essential, more severe cases may require options like bariatric surgery.
“Childhood obesity is a pressing issue in our country due to our large young population. Children who are obese are more likely to carry these issues into adulthood, facing a range of metabolic conditions including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, joint pain, and obstructive sleep apnea,” Dr. Daksh Sethi, Consultant in Minimal and Bariatric and Robotic Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, told IANS.

Dr. Sethi suggested adopting strategies similar to those in the U.S., where schools regularly track students’ BMI and engage with families to address obesity. He recommended implementing such measures in India to better monitor and manage the issue.
For treatment, Dr. Sethi emphasize the importance of lifestyle modifications and note that bariatric surgery consider for older children or those with specific health conditions.
The link between early adulthood weight gain and heart health highlight. Dr. Jyoti Kusnur, Consultant in Interventional Cardiology at Manipal Hospital Goa, discussed the risks associated with excess weight in early adulthood, including an increased likelihood of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders.
“Excess weight contributes to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, raising the risk of heart attacks and strokes,” Dr. Kusnur said. She stressed the importance of a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding harmful habits. Additionally, she advised regular health check-ups to monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels for early detection and management of potential health issues.
However, experts agree that proactive measures and lifestyle adjustments are crucial in combating the rising rates of childhood obesity and mitigating its long-term health consequences.
