PIB Issues Fact Check On Viral Claim About New WhatsApp Monitoring Guidelines

The Press Information Bureau’s fact-checking unit has issued a clarification after a message went viral on social media claiming that the Indian government has rolled out new WhatsApp monitoring guidelines.

The PIB has categorically stated that the claim is false and no such guidelines have been issued.

The misinformation sparked widespread concern among users worried about their privacy and data security.

Many shared the viral message, believing it to be an official directive regarding government surveillance of WhatsApp chats.

Issuing a clear denial, PIB stated, “Heads up! Have you also come across a message claiming the Indian government has rolled out new WhatsApp monitoring guidelines? #PIBFactCheck:  That information is FALSE! The Government of India has NOT released any such guidelines. Stay informed and don’t fall for misinformation! Share this to bust the myth!”

The bureau urged users to remain cautious and verify facts from authorised sources before sharing such messages further.

Combating Social Media Misinformation

With social media being a primary source of news for many, false claims can spread rapidly and cause unnecessary panic.

The PIB’s fact-checking initiative plays a vital role in countering such misinformation and maintaining public trust.

Officials reiterated that no changes have been made to WhatsApp monitoring or privacy policies by the government.

They encouraged citizens to rely only on updates from official government handles and to avoid forwarding unverified messages.

Experts have emphasised the importance of digital literacy and responsible sharing, particularly when dealing with sensitive topics like data security and surveillance.

The government advises users to check the authenticity of such claims through official portals like PIB Fact Check or the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

In recent years, several viral messages have circulated claiming government-imposed monitoring on popular social media platforms.

Most of these have turned out to be baseless, highlighting the need for a systematic approach to tackling misinformation online.

PIB swiftly clarifies information to stop false narratives from misleading citizens and to maintain trust in official communication channels.

The Government of India has not introduced any new WhatsApp monitoring guidelines, the Press Information Bureau confirmed.

Authorities urge users to dismiss such claims, avoid sharing unverified content, and rely on official sources for accurate information.

Digital safety experts advise staying informed through credible channels and promoting awareness to curb the spread of misinformation in the digital age.
