A widely circulated letter on social media claimed that the Indian government had formally requested Pakistan to hand over former Prime Minister Imran Khan ‘as a political prisoner’.
Several Pakistan-based accounts shared the document, styling it to appear like a classified communication from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and prompting confusion online.
The false narrative surfaced at a sensitive moment in Pakistan, with heightened speculation surrounding Imran Khan’s health and access to his family.
The fabricated letter was presented as if it had been issued by the Joint Secretary of MEA’s Pakistan–Afghanistan–Iran division and addressed to Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary. It attempted to appear official, citing ‘restricted diplomatic channels’ and expressing purported concerns about Khan’s ‘personal security and physical well-being’.
It further alleged that Indian ‘assessment units’ had detected a ‘rising risk environment’ around the former Pakistani leader, drawing an odd comparison with the protective measures once offered to Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina.
The letter falsely suggested that India had proposed transferring Khan to a ‘secure location’ under a ‘mutually agreed protective framework’.
PIB’s Fact Check
The Press Information Bureau was quick to dismiss the document as entirely fake.
In a statement posted on X, it said, “Several Pakistani propaganda accounts are circulating a letter on social media, claiming it to be a top-secret Ministry of External Affairs document that allegedly leaked online. The fabricated letter claims that the Indian Government has requested Pakistan to send Imran Khan to India as a political prisoner.”

PIB also urged users not to share unverified content and to rely solely on official government sources. This was not the first instance of Pakistan-linked actors circulating fabricated documents.
Earlier, PIB had debunked a digitally morphed letter falsely attributed to Air Chief Marshal AP Singh.
Growing Concerns About Imran Khan in Pakistan
Alongside the fake letter controversy, speculation about Imran Khan’s condition has intensified.
Unverified posts recently claimed Khan had died in custody – rumours that Pakistani authorities firmly rejected.
Authorities have jailed Khan since August 2023, and he is serving a 14-year sentence in a corruption case.
His son, Kasim Khan, stated on X that the family has had no direct contact with him for weeks and demanded proof that he is alive.

He alleged that Khan has been kept in solitary confinement and denied family visits despite court orders.
Pakistani officials have since confirmed that Khan is alive and under regular medical supervision.
Authorities at Adiala Jail also dismissed the rumours, stating that the 73-year-old former PM is in stable condition.
