Government Debunks Forged Letter Circulating On Social Media

The Press Information Bureau’s fact-checking unit has declared a widely circulated social media letter fake and clarified that it falsely attributes its origin to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The forged document, addressed to Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, alleges to discuss the disclosure of a sensitive assessment by the Indian Air Force.

PIB Fact Check confirmed that the Ministry of Defence issued no such communication. It also stated that someone had deliberately fabricated the letter to mislead the public.

Officials stressed that unverified documents undermine public trust and threaten national security. They warned that the risk increases when people circulate such documents as if they were official correspondence.

In its advisory, PIB Fact Check urged citizens to refrain from forwarding or promoting such material without verification. The unit emphasised that the public should consider only information published through authorised Government of India sources as accurate and reliable.

Authorities noted that misinformation disguised as official documentation has become increasingly common. This trend, they said, has prompted the need for greater vigilance among social media users. Sharing inaccurate content, they warned, can contribute to unnecessary confusion and potentially undermine confidence in legitimate government communications.

Mechanisms for Reporting Suspicious Content

To help curb the spread of false information, PIB Fact Check has encouraged the public to submit any questionable documents or claims for verification. Users can report suspicious material through the official WhatsApp number or by email.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader effort to enhance digital literacy and promote responsible online behaviour.

Officials reiterated that proactive reporting by citizens plays a crucial role in countering misinformation. They added that such vigilance helps maintain the integrity of public discourse.

By swiftly identifying and debunking the forged letter, the government has sought to reaffirm its commitment to transparency and accurate communication. Officials stated that timely fact-checking remains essential to safeguarding public understanding and preventing the spread of baseless rumours online.

The Ministry of Defence has not issued any further comment on the matter. It continues to encourage the public to rely exclusively on official channels for all defence-related information.
