Fake India Post SMS Targets Users With Phishing Link

The government’s PIB Fact Check team has warned citizens about a fake SMS scam falsely claiming to be from India Post.

The fake message claims a parcel couldn’t be delivered because of an ‘incomplete address’ and asks users to click a link to update it. However, the link actually takes users to a fake website made to steal their personal and banking details.

PIB Fact Check has clarified that India Post never sends random or unsolicited text messages.

It does not ask customers to share personal or address details through SMS.

People receiving such messages should stay cautious. They must avoid clicking on any unknown links in those messages.

Only the official India Post website or mobile app should be used for parcel tracking.

Cybersecurity firm Fortinet reported that the phishing campaign has been active in India since mid-2024.

However, it has already targeted millions of users.

The scam takes advantage of people’s trust in government services. By using official-looking SMS templates, logos and URLs that closely resemble legitimate India Post links.

Cybercriminals build look-alike websites, using addresses almost identical to the genuine India Post site, for example, ‘indiapostdelivery.co’.

Once users type in their information, criminals can steal it and use it for illegal transactions or identity theft.

Experts advise users to carefully check URLs before entering any personal information.

Authentic India Post messages will come only from verified handles and will never ask for confidential details through SMS or email.

PIB Fact Check has urged citizens to report fake messages quickly and spread awareness to stop scammers from trapping others. It also advised people to stay cautious about phishing scams posing as banks, government offices, or courier services.

To stay safe online, always use official apps or websites, avoid sharing sensitive information over random links and verify all communication from unknown numbers or senders.

The viral SMS claiming to be from India Post is fake.

Users should not click any links and must rely only on the official India Post website or app for tracking parcels.
