The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit has issued a strong warning over a digitally manipulated video circulating on social media, falsely showing Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi making inflammatory claims about the removal of non-caste Hindu soldiers from the Indian Army.
PIB Fact Check said that several Pakistan-based propaganda accounts are sharing an AI-generated deepfake video alleging that the central government will remove 50 per cent of non-caste Hindu soldiers from the Army by 2028.
The bureau categorically denied the authenticity of the clip. It emphasised that General Dwivedi has never made such a statement and that the Government of India has issued no such directive.
Officials described the video as part of a deliberate attempt to mislead citizens and sow distrust towards the Indian Armed Forces.
PIB stressed that creators used advanced digital tools to fabricate the video. It warned that such misinformation campaigns seriously threaten public trust and national security.
The bureau encouraged citizens to stay cautious and refrain from forwarding such misleading content. It also urged them to rely solely on verified government channels for accurate information.
Official channels have shared an unaltered version of the original video involving General Dwivedi to dispel any confusion.
The incident heightens growing concern over the misuse of deepfake technology. It is increasingly being used to fabricate statements by public figures, particularly those linked to national security.
Authorities have repeatedly expressed the need for heightened public awareness and responsible digital behaviour to curb the spread of misinformation.
PIB reaffirmed its commitment to identifying and debunking false narratives. It also urged people to report suspicious content and avoid contributing to the viral spread of manipulated media.
As deepfake-driven misinformation grows more sophisticated, government agencies and digital platforms are likely to intensify their monitoring efforts. These measures aim to safeguard public discourse and protect institutional credibility.
