The Government of India, through PIB Fact Check, has firmly rejected viral social media assertions suggesting that the country possesses only nine days of oil reserves.
Officials clarified that India maintains sufficient energy stocks to meet demand for nearly 60 days.
Authorities explained that the widely circulated claim misinterprets limited data.
The figure of approximately 9.5 days refers solely to strategic petroleum reserves. It excludes commercial inventories and refined petroleum products, which together form a substantial portion of the nation’s total energy buffer.

The misleading graphic gained traction after being shared by several individuals, including Prashant Bhushan.
The claim originated from a report published by India Today on March 24, 2026.
The report cited RTI-based information but focused exclusively on strategic reserves, thereby presenting an incomplete picture.
The government has confirmed that India’s combined reserve capacity stands at approximately 74 days. This includes crude oil, petroleum products, and underground strategic storage.
Officials further assured that secured import arrangements guarantee an uninterrupted supply for nearly two months.
The Centre emphasised that the country’s energy framework remains stable and well-managed. It urged citizens to rely on verified information and avoid spreading unsubstantiated claims that may create unnecessary concern.
The clarification comes as discussions on energy security intensify due to evolving geopolitical conditions.
Authorities reiterated that India’s supply chains remain resilient and capable of meeting domestic requirements without disruption.
