The PIB Fact Check has categorically dismissed a widely circulated social media claim alleging that India has only two days of petrol supply remaining.

The misleading post, which cited the Petroleum Ministry, triggered panic buying at fuel stations across several regions.
Officials clarified that the claim is entirely false and lacks any official basis. They urged citizens to refrain from spreading unverified information and to rely solely on credible government communications.
The clarification comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions linked to the Iran-Israel situation, which have raised concerns about global energy supply chains.
The government has reiterated that India’s fuel availability remains stable and well-managed.
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri confirmed that domestic refineries are operating at over 100 per cent capacity to ensure an uninterrupted supply. He stated that India currently holds crude reserves sufficient for approximately 60 days.
In addition, strategic petroleum reserves provide an extended buffer of up to 74 days, offering further assurance against any potential disruptions. These reserves strengthen the nation’s readiness to handle external disruptions efficiently.
Recent updates from March 2026 indicate that there is no actual shortage of fuel across the nation.
The minister also highlighted that India has significantly diversified its crude import sources.
Nearly 70 per cent of imports now originate from regions outside the Strait of Hormuz, reducing dependency on volatile routes.
Officials emphasised that these measures collectively safeguard energy security and maintain market stability.
Citizens have been advised to avoid panic purchases and trust official updates.
