Social media has been flooded with claims about Chief Justice of India Surya Kant’s alleged remarks on caste, reservation and the University Grants Commission (UGC) Equity Regulations.

Several viral posts attribute statements to the Supreme Court bench during hearings on the 2026 UGC Equity Regulations.

A widely shared graphic claims that Justice Surya Kant questioned why anyone could describe Brahmins as oppressed after they produced IAS and IPS officers, a Chief Justice, a President and a Prime Minister.

Other posts attribute questions to the bench about whether Brahmins were responsible for creating caste divisions among Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains.

Some graphics claim the court questioned why people continued to identify themselves through caste while opposing caste divisions.

Another widely circulated graphic attributes the statement, “We want a casteless society; do you want to take the country into the past?” to the court and presents it as part of a debate over the UGC regulations and reservation.

The Supreme Court did discuss the idea of a casteless society while hearing challenges to the 2026 UGC Equity Regulations.

The bench raised concerns about provisions that could potentially reinforce caste-based divisions.

The viral statement about Brahmins, IAS and IPS officers, the Chief Justice, President and Prime Minister is separate from those documented observations.

Justice Surya Kant has denied making the statement and described the attribution as fabricated.

The controversy has therefore involved two distinct issues: the court’s reported observations about caste and social divisions during the UGC case, and the separate viral remarks attributed personally to CJI Surya Kant, which he has rejected.
