Daler Mehndi Controversy: FWICE Writes To PM Modi, CM Dhami Over Uttarakhand Concert Row

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has expressed support for singer Daler Mehndi amid a controversy over remarks about his condition during a public performance in Uttarakhand.

The organisation has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, stating that it knows the singer does not consume alcohol.

The federation highlighted his ongoing health-related issues and recovery from surgery.

In its letter, FWICE acknowledged the need to ensure the smooth conduct of public events. It urged authorities to address concerns with sensitivity and discretion rather than publicly reprimanding performers.

The organisation stressed the importance of exercising restraint before reaching conclusions about an artist’s condition. It added that authorities should handle concerns about performers’ well-being with compassion and professionalism.

FWICE described Mehndi as a celebrated figure in Indian music whose songs and performances have earned recognition across generations.

The federation said the public humiliation of a senior artist had deeply distressed the entertainment fraternity. It emphasised that organisers and public representatives must treat artists fairly, regardless of their stature or circumstances.

The organisation called on authorities to handle concerns about performers’ health and professional conduct appropriately. It reiterated its commitment to protecting workers’ welfare, professional rights and fair treatment across the entertainment industry.

The controversy arose on Sunday when Mehndi performed at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in New Tehri, Uttarakhand.

During the performance, state Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal interrupted the singer and alleged that he was under the influence of alcohol.

The incident prompted criticism and concern within the entertainment fraternity, leading FWICE to seek greater sensitivity from public representatives and event organisers when dealing with artists.
