Diwali 2026: Can You Reuse The Same Diya For Puja Or Should You Light A New One?

Lighting a diya is an important part of Hindu traditions, symbolising knowledge, hope and the triumph of light over darkness.

As Diwali approaches, many households prepare to illuminate their homes with traditional lamps. This often raises a question: can the same diya be reused, or should a new one be lit for every puja?

The answer depends on the type of diya, family customs and the purpose of the ritual.

In Hindu beliefs, the flame is associated with Agni, the fire deity, and spiritual illumination.

Can Copper and Brass Diyas Be Reused?

Copper and brass diyas are generally suitable for repeated use. They can be cleaned with water and lemon or suitable cleaning products, such as Pitambari powder, before the next puja. Steel lamps can be washed and reused.

Devotees should ensure that the lamp is free of oil residue and soot before relighting it.

Should Clay Diyas Be Reused During Diwali?

Many families prefer new clay diyas during Diwali as a symbol of fresh beginnings and to support traditional pottery.

Suitable clay lamps can be reused after thorough cleaning. Some household traditions recommend wiping them clean and using turmeric water.

If a clay diya is no longer suitable for worship, it can be crushed and mixed into garden soil, provided it has no harmful paint or coating.

Why Cleaning Matters Before Relighting a Diya

Cleanliness and devotion are important aspects of preparing a lamp for worship. Before reusing a diya, devotees should remove soot and oil residue and use a fresh wick with new ghee or oil.

Beliefs about preserving positive spiritual energy through diya lighting vary across households and traditions. There is no single practice followed by every Hindu family.

Ultimately, metal diyas are commonly reused after cleaning, while many households prefer fresh clay lamps for Diwali.

The choice depends on family customs and personal beliefs, with devotion and cleanliness remaining central to the ritual.
