On the directions of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Hazratganj Police Station in Lucknow has registered an FIR against the forthcoming film Ghooskhor Pandat.
Police officials said they filed the case after receiving complaints that the film’s title and promotional content could disturb social harmony and hurt religious and caste sentiments.
According to the police, the step followed the seriousness of the allegations and the state’s zero-tolerance policy towards attempts to disturb public peace.
Legal proceedings and an investigation are currently underway.
Authorities have also noted growing anger within sections of the Brahmin community and several social organisations, some of which warned of aggressive protests if the administration failed to act.
Amid the controversy, lead actor Manoj Bajpayee stated on social media, asserting that Ghooskhor Pandat is ‘not about any community’. He said the project focuses on portraying a flawed individual and his journey of self-realisation, and does not comment on any caste or group.
Bajpayee added that the makers’ decision to take down promotional material reflects their seriousness in addressing concerns raised by viewers.
Filmmaker Neeraj Pandey, in an official clarification issued through Netflix’s publicity team and shared on his Instagram handle, stated that the word ‘Pandat’ is used as a colloquial name for a fictional character.
He clarified that it does not represent any particular caste, religion or community, and apologised for any hurt sentiments caused due to the title.
