The Mumbai Crime Branch’s Anti-Extortion Cell has arrested one more accused in connection with the firing incident at Bollywood filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s residence, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The arrested individual has been identified as Asaram Fasle alias Babu.
According to the Crime Branch, Fasle supplied the firearm used in the firing at Shetty’s house.
“The Mumbai Crime Branch’s Anti-Extortion Cell has arrested Asaram Fasle alias Babu in connection with the firing incident at Bollywood director Rohit Shetty’s residence. He was responsible for supplying the weapon used in the firing,” an official statement said.
The Crime Branch team will produce Fasle before the Esplanade Court (Killa Court) in Mumbai later today.
Earlier, Mumbai Police arrested four accused in the same case.
Their police remand ends today, and investigators are expected to approach the court for further directions based on the progress of the probe.
On February 3, police traced the scooter used in the firing incident to a man in Pune.
According to police sources, the Pune-based individual allegedly sold the scooter a few days earlier to Aditya Gayaki, one of the arrested accused, for ₹30,000.
He reportedly obtained Gayaki’s signature on a blank piece of paper during the transaction.
Gayaki, along with another accused, Samarth Pomaji, later abandoned the scooter at a pre-decided location in Mumbai’s Juhu area.
Investigators said the accused acted on direct instructions from Shubham Lonkar and was unaware of the shooter’s identity.
Lonkar allegedly told the shooter to collect the scooter from Juhu and open fire. Police noted a similar multi-group modus operandi in earlier cases.
The shooter remains at large, and the Crime Branch has intensified the investigation.
