Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom Top The Charts On Christmas Weekend In North America

The weekend before Christmas Monday saw a number of new releases, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom leading the pack. According to studio estimates released on Sunday, the DC and Warner Bros. superhero sequel starring Jason Momoa made an estimated $28.1 million in its first three days of release at 3,706 locations across North America. It is expected to generate almost $40 million in domestic ticket sales by Monday.

Rather quite holiday period

This will be remembered as a quieter pre-holiday period at the box office, despite a plethora of new options, such as the family-friendly animated feature Migration, the R-rated romantic comedy Anyone But You, the wrestling tragedy The Iron Claw, and a ghostly tearjerker in All of Us Strangers. Maybe moviegoers had other things on their minds besides visiting the theater.

Christmas Eve falling on a big weekend day is never good for Hollywood or movie theaters, but the last time Christmas fell on a Monday was in 2017, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi topped the four-day charts with $71.5 million from its second weekend.

Other movies to look upon on Christmas

More new movies will be added to the lineup on Christmas Day, which often draws large audiences back to the cinemas. These include the high-profile musical version of The Color Purple, Ferrari, directed by Michael Mann, and The Boys in the Boat, a drama starring George Clooney about rowing. The period between Christmas and New Year’s, which is usually a profitable one for movie theaters, should also help everyone.

However, none can match the box office success of some of the largest films, such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avatar, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Social media users were aware that Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars film Rogue Squadron was scheduled to release this weekend.

“Seven openers in the course of four days is unusual,” said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.

Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom earning projections

Production costs for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are reported to have totaled about $200 million, excluding expenses for marketing and promotion. With international predictions as high as $80 million through Monday, Aquaman is expected to make its global debut at a cost of $120 million. In 2018, the first movie took in $67.8 million at its premiere and went on to gross nearly $1.2 billion worldwide. Dergarabedian pointed out that the first movie likewise brought in over 70% of its total revenue from overseas box office.

The release of Aquaman brings an end to a challenging, transitional year for DC superhero movies, which had several box office busts, including Shazam! The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Fury of the Gods are among the films the company is phasing out to make room for James Gunn’s future vision. The last “holdover” from the previous government was Aquaman 2.
