Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the leadership teams of Tata Sons and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) on Thursday. They discussed the Rs 91,000 crore semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat. PM Modi called the meeting “great” and noted PSMC’s eagerness to expand in India.
Railways and Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced a technology agreement between Tata Electronics and PSMC. He stated that a “holistic semiconductor ecosystem is taking shape” after the discussions. N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, also attended.
In March, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the Tata-PSMC chip plant. This facility will generate over 20,000 direct and indirect skilled jobs. It will manufacture up to 50,000 wafers per month. The plant will feature advanced automation using data analytics and machine learning.
The semiconductor fab will produce chips for power management ICs, display drivers, microcontrollers, and high-performance computing logic. This initiative aims to meet rising demand in automotive, computing, data storage, wireless communication, and artificial intelligence sectors.
Chandrasekaran highlighted Tata Group’s history of innovation. He expressed confidence that entering semiconductor fabrication will strengthen this legacy. PM Modi emphasized that now is the right time for semiconductor manufacturing in India. He pointed to the country’s integrated ecosystem and large talent pool.
