Indian benchmark equity indices closed lower on Tuesday, ending a four-session winning streak as losses in metal and realty stocks overshadowed gains in information technology and consumer-focused sectors.

The Sensex dropped 104.35 points, or 0.13 per cent, to settle at 78,180.72. The Nifty declined 31.65 points, or 0.13 per cent, to close at 24,398.70.

Market analysts said the 24,500-24,600 range remains the immediate resistance zone for the Nifty in the coming sessions. They identified 24,300 as the first support level, followed by the crucial 24,200 demand zone.

Analysts added that the index must remain above these levels to preserve its prevailing bullish trend.

Among Nifty constituents, Titan Company, Tech Mahindra and HCLTech emerged as the session’s top gainers, supported by strength in the IT and consumer durables segments.

The broader market also finished in negative territory. The Nifty MidCap index declined 0.30 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index slipped 0.55 per cent.

On the sectoral front, the Nifty IT index outperformed the broader market.

The Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty FMCG indices also displayed resilience.

The Nifty Metal and Nifty Realty indices recorded the steepest losses and dragged the benchmark indices lower.

Market experts said weakness in metal and realty shares dampened investor sentiment despite gains in select technology and consumer stocks. They added that easing concerns over the US-Iran conflict and trade tariffs have shifted investors’ attention towards Q1FY27 earnings and monsoon progress.

Experts also said improving foreign institutional investor inflows and a stable rupee should continue supporting near-term market sentiment.
