Indian equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty opened higher on Tuesday, September 15, despite weak global cues, as elevated US bond yields and crude oil prices continued to weigh on investor sentiment.

The Sensex opened at 75,369.63, gaining 587.87 points or 0.79 per cent, while the Nifty began trading at 23,576.15, up 178.05 points or 0.76 per cent.

Information technology stocks led the early gains, with the Nifty IT index rising more than 4 per cent. The Nifty MidSmall IT & Telecom index advanced nearly 2 per cent.

Among other sectors, the Nifty FMCG index gained 0.72 per cent, while the Nifty Auto index rose 0.31 per cent. Media, energy and private banking stocks traded marginally higher.

Several sectors remained under pressure. The Nifty Metal index fell 0.58 per cent, while Nifty Financial Services Ex-Bank and Nifty MidSmall Financial Services declined 0.52 per cent and 0.50 per cent, respectively.

Nifty Pharma slipped 0.37 per cent, while cement, healthcare, consumer durables and realty stocks traded lower.

Among Nifty 50 stocks, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Grasim Industries, BEL, Shriram Finance and InterGlobe Aviation emerged as the biggest losers, declining between nearly 1 per cent and 1.67 per cent.

Market experts said global equities could remain under pressure as the US 10-year Treasury yield approaches the psychologically important 5 per cent level.

Rising crude oil prices could keep the broader macroeconomic environment challenging.

Strong IPO activity and broader-market outperformance continue to support Indian equities.

Technically, the Nifty’s rebound from 23,260–23,000 signals a possible uptrend. It could target 23,720, but a break below 23,260–23,000 may drag it towards 22,600–21,800.
