Indian financial markets remained closed on Friday as the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE observed the Muharram holiday.
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE suspended trading across equity cash, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, and the Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) segment for the day.
The Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) closed its morning trading session from 9 AM to 5 PM and will resume trading during the evening session from 5 PM.
The National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), which primarily trades agricultural commodities, remained closed throughout the day.
After the Muharram holiday, Indian stock exchanges will continue normal trading until the next scheduled market holiday on 14 September for Ganesh Chaturthi.
The remaining scheduled market holidays for the year include 2 October for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, 20 October for Dussehra, 10 November for Diwali-Balipratipada, 24 November for Prakash Gurpurab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, and 25 December for Christmas.
Ahead of the holiday, benchmark indices extended their gains, although late-session profit booking in information technology and metal stocks trimmed much of the day’s advances.
The BSE Sensex settled 0.14 per cent higher at 77,100.47 after climbing to an intraday peak of 77,803.18. The NSE Nifty also posted a gain of 34.35 points, or 0.14 per cent, to finish at 24,056.
Despite the positive close in headline indices, broader market performance remained subdued.
The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 each declined by 0.5 per cent, reflecting weakness beyond the benchmark stocks.
With the Muharram holiday falling on a Friday, investors and traders will return to the markets after a three-day weekend when normal trading resumes on Monday, 29 June.
