On Sunday, CEO Elon Musk stated that SpaceX is preparing for the fourth test flight of its Starship rocket, with numerous improvements, set for 6 June.
Pending regulatory approval, the 400-foot-tall Starship and its Heavy booster are slated for liftoff from SpaceX’s Starbase facility near Boca Chica Beach, South Texas, at 7 AM CT on 6 June.
“Starship Flight 4, with many improvements, is aiming to launch on Thursday!” Musk announced on the social media platform X.com.
He further elaborated that the primary goal of this mission is to achieve deeper atmospheric reentry, aiming to endure maximum heating conditions.
SpaceX outlined the mission’s objectives in a blog post, emphasizing the aim to “achieve orbit to demonstrate the ability to return and reuse Starship and Super Heavy.”
Key objectives include executing a landing burn and achieving a soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico for the Super Heavy booster, along with a controlled entry of the Starship.
SpaceX has implemented several software and hardware upgrades.
Unlike the previous test flights, Flight 4 will not require a deorbit burn for reentry, which maximizes public safety while still providing an opportunity to achieve a controlled reentry.
This test flight marks another step towards SpaceX’s vision of a rapidly reusable future.
The company aims to build a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond, bringing us closer to a new era in space exploration.
