Sensex and Nifty recovered from intra-day lows to close higher on Wednesday, aided by late-day buying in market heavyweights Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank, and HDFC Bank.
Following a flat start, the BSE benchmark bounced between gains and losses before closing 271.50 points or 0.38 percent higher at 71,657.71. During the session, the index fell to 71,110.98 and rose to 71,733.84.
The Nifty surged 73.85 points or 0.34 percent to 21,618.70.
Reliance Industries, HCL Tech, ICICI Bank, Tata Motors, Wipro, IndusInd Bank, JSW Steel, Wipro, Tata Consultancy Services, and Titan were the top gainers on Sensex.
Among the laggards were NTPC, Power Grid, UltraTech Cement, Axis Bank, Infosys, and Nestle.
In Asian markets, Tokyo settled higher while Seoul, Shanghai, and Hong Kong settled lower.
The majority of European markets were trading in the green.
On Tuesday, the US markets finished mainly lower.
According to the exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold securities worth Rs 990.90 crore on Tuesday.
Brent crude lost 0.19 percent to USD 77.44 a barrel.
On Tuesday, the BSE Sensex gained 30.99 points or 0.04 percent to 71,386.21. The Nifty advanced 31.85 points or 0.15 percent to 21,544.85.
