Sensex Crosses 78k Level, Nifty Closes At A Record High

In Asian markets, Singapore, Thailand, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea ended in positive territory, while Indonesia, Malaysia, and Shanghai closed in negative territory

The benchmark Sensex crossed the historic 78,000 milestone for the first time, while the Nifty settled at a fresh record high on Tuesday, driven by strong Asian market trends and buying in banking stocks.

The 30-share BSE Sensex soared 712.44 points, or 0.92 percent to 78,053.52. During the day, the benchmark surged 823.63 points, or 1 percent, to a new lifetime high of 78,164.71.

The Nifty climbed 183.45 points, or 0.77 percent to 23,721.3. During the day, it gained 216.3 points, or 0.91 percent, to reach a new all-time high of 23,754.15. Bank Nifty jumped 902.05 points, or 1.74 percent to a new record high of 52,606.00.

Shriram Finance, Axis Bank, Samvardhana Motherson, Bosch, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, HDFC Life Insurance, Tech Mahindra, and Zomato were the top gainers.

Among the laggards were BPCL, Adani Total Gas, Vedanta, Eicher Motors, Interglobe Aviation, DLF, Adani Ports, Power Grid Corp, and IRCTC.

In Asian markets, Singapore, Thailand, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea ended in positive territory, while Indonesia, Malaysia, and Shanghai closed in negative territory.

US markets closed on a mixed note on Monday.

European stocks were trading lower.

Brent crude lost 0.44 percent to USD 85.63 per barrel.

According to exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 653.97 crore on Monday.

On Monday, the Sensex advanced 131.18 points, or 0.16 percent to 77,341.08, while the Nifty moved 36.75 points, or 0.15 percent to 23,537.85.
