The e-Shram portal has registered over 30.4 crore unorganised workers as of December 1, 2024, the Ministry of Labour and Employment informed Parliament on Thursday. Launched on August 26, 2021, the portal aims to create a comprehensive National Database of Unorganised Workers (NDUW) linked to Aadhaar.
The platform provides unorganised workers with a Universal Account Number (UAN) based on self-declaration. Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje confirmed the data in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
Majority of Registrations from Rural Areas
According to the report, rural areas accounted for 27.22 crore registrations, reflecting the portal’s wide reach in the countryside. Furthermore, the initiative has integrated 12 schemes from various central ministries to benefit workers.
These schemes include Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), and Ayushman Bharat. Additionally, it supports Prime Minister Street Vendors AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM-SVANidhi) and PM Awas Yojana, among others.
Focus on Benefits for Unorganised Workers
The government designed the e-Shram portal to register workers in sectors such as construction, street vending, and domestic work. Moreover, it aims to facilitate better access to social security benefits and streamline welfare schemes.
The initiative reflects the government’s focus on empowering unorganised workers and ensuring their inclusion in formal systems. As registrations grow, the portal plays a key role in bridging gaps between workers and government benefits.
