NTPC Commissions Green Coal Plant In Varanasi

A groundbreaking commercial green coal plant that would create torrefied charcoal from municipal garbage has been launched in Varanasi by state-owned energy company NTPC.

According to an official statement, NTPC had planned to produce green coal (torrefied charcoal) from municipal waste almost three years prior.

The project was given to Macawber Beekay by NTPC’s subsidiary, NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVNL), on an EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) basis. Recently, the first reactor module for the 200 TPD Harit Koyla (Green Coal) Pariyojna plant at Ramana in Varanasi was installed and commissioned, according to the company.

If all three modules are installed, this plant will have a total waste processing capacity of 600 TPD.

The factory occupies 20 acres of land. Thermal power plants can successfully combine fuel with identical natural coal torrefied charcoal (green coal) to generate electricity.

The method uses specialized conversion technology developed by Macawber Beekay, making it environmentally beneficial because trash is not burned but rather treated inside the reactor.

“200 tonnes of trash from this plant were converted into 70 tonnes of green coal by NTPC. More green coal from waste units would be installed following the experiment’s success”, it was announced.
