NHAI Implements ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ Initiative to Streamline Toll Transactions on Highways

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ campaign, effective from April 1, 2024, aimed at discouraging the misuse of FASTags across multiple vehicles or linking several FASTags to a single vehicle.

NHAI’s decision to implement this initiative stems from recent instances of multiple FASTags being issued for the same vehicle and the distribution of FASTags without adhering to the mandatory KYC (Know Your Customer) process, thus violating the guidelines outlined by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Additionally, some users were found neglecting to affix FASTags to their vehicle windshields, resulting in delays at toll plazas and inconvenience for fellow highway users.

To ensure compliance, NHAI urges FASTag users to complete their KYC process in accordance with RBI guidelines. FASTags that possess a balance but have not undergone KYC procedures will be deactivated or blacklisted by banks post February 29, 2024, as specified in a PIB release.

Here are some key FAQs regarding the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative:

Can users recharge FASTag with any bank?

The answer to this question is yes. Users can recharge their FASTag using any bank’s services or payment methods, like BBPS, UPI, or net banking. However, each vehicle should have only one active FASTag, and all previous ones will be deactivated.

How can users verify if multiple FASTags are linked to their vehicle?

Users can verify the status of FASTags linked to their vehicle by visiting the official link provided by the Indian Highways Management Company (IHCML), entering their vehicle details, and submitting the request.

How can users determine if their FASTag KYC is incomplete?

Users will receive notifications via email, SMS, or through their bank’s application interface regarding incomplete KYC. To update KYC, follow the procedures specified for FASTags issued by NHAI or different banks.

Can users use a FASTag purchased for one vehicle on another vehicle?

No, each FASTag is issued based on the vehicle’s RC copy. Mismatches will lead to the FASTag being blacklisted by the issuer bank.

What happens if users fail to update their KYC after 2 years?

Users will be prohibited from recharging their wallets but can utilize the existing balance for toll transactions until their tags are marked as “Low Balance” and blocked.

To update KYC, log in to the IHMCL customer portal, select “My Profile,” then the “KYC” sub-section. Fill in the required ID and address proof documents, and your KYC request will be processed within 7 working days.

NHAI underscores the importance of adhering to these guidelines to facilitate smoother toll transactions and enhance the management of the FASTag system on national highways.
