On Friday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully placed the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite into space, using the GSLV-F17 rocket launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

The 51.7-metre GSLV-F17 lifted off from the second launch pad at 02:55 AM, following a 27.5-hour countdown.
The three-stage rocket completed its mission as planned and deployed the satellite into the designated Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.
Weighing around 2,367 kg, EOS-05 will undergo further orbit-raising operations before reaching its intended operational position.
The satellite is designed to capture detailed images of large areas from geosynchronous orbit, allowing repeated observations of the Indian subcontinent and neighbouring regions. Its data will likely support disaster management, agriculture, environmental studies, natural resource monitoring and tracking of weather-related events.
Regular imaging could provide faster information during emergencies and rapidly developing disasters.
The mission is the 19th flight of the GSLV and uses India’s indigenous cryogenic upper stage. It further marks further progress in ISRO’s effort to develop Earth observation capabilities from geosynchronous orbit.
The launch follows the unsuccessful GSLV-F10 mission in August 2021, which carried the EOS-03 satellite. That mission failed after the cryogenic upper stage could not complete its planned operation.
With EOS-05 now successfully deployed, ISRO has added another advanced satellite to India’s Earth observation network, strengthening its ability to monitor large areas for civilian, developmental and strategic requirements.
