IndiGo CEO Hails India’s Aviation Potential; Calls It A ‘Beautiful Opportunity’ At IATA AGM

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers on Tuesday said India’s aviation growth presents a ‘beautiful opportunity’ for the world.

Speaking in New Delhi during the 81st Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Elbers praised India’s scale and potential in both domestic and international markets.

He compared the current boom in India to China’s growth a decade ago.

“China had a significant development in terms of growth and the number of aircraft and travellers. Probably like a decade ago, the entire development was there. When we speak about this being India’s time, we see enormous growth,” Elbers stated.

IATA AGM Returns To India After 42 years

The 81st IATA AGM, held in India after 42 years, is taking place from 1 to 3 June in New Delhi. It brings together over 1,600 global aviation leaders, government officials, and media.

Elbers asserted the main message from the AGM is clear, noting, “This is India’s time.”

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for their strong and ongoing support.

“It has been very successful in showcasing to the world the expanding opportunities and new destinations made possible by this commitment,” he added.

Domestic Growth Strong, International Potential Even Greater

Elbers noted that India’s aviation growth is robust in the domestic sector, with international markets showing even greater promise.

“New flights and more connections between India and Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore are part of a massive opportunity going forward,” he said.

He also mentioned IndiGo’s early steps into Europe, highlighting Italy as a destination with strong potential.

IATA Director General Willie Walsh echoed the sentiment, thanking Prime Minister Modi.

“I was honoured to meet the honourable Prime Minister. His presence at the AGM shows his commitment and the government’s vision for the future of the aviation industry here,” Walsh said.
