India’s Tourism Sector Set to Create 39.5 Million Jobs By Year-End

India’s tourism sector is on track to generate approximately 39.5 million jobs by the end of this year. A report shows that this number could rise to 42.3 million by 2025. Direct employment will comprise 31 percent of these roles, including positions such as tour guides, hotel staff, and tour operators, according to NLB Services, a technology and digital talent solutions provider.

Employment Breakdown and Economic Impact

Indirect employment will account for 69 percent of jobs, encompassing roles for local artisans, logistics operators, supply chain workers, IT support for online booking, data analysis, and landscape maintenance. Sachin Alug, CEO of NLB Services, stated that the tourism sector has a strong multiplier effect, with each direct job creating multiple indirect jobs.

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) forecasts an annual GDP growth of 7.1 percent for India’s travel and tourism sector over the next decade. The industry significantly impacts the economy, contributing approximately $199.6 billion to the GDP. The government allocated Rs 2,479 crore for tourism in FY25, which will further boost the sector.

Emerging Trends in Tourism

Emerging trends indicate a growing interest in adventure, wellness, and culinary tourism, as travelers seek local experiences. Spiritual tourism continues to attract domestic and international visitors to cities like Varanasi, Rishikesh, and Bodh Gaya.

India ranks 10th globally on the Medical Tourism Index for 2020-2021 and is expected to improve its position. This growth is projected to increase the demand for healthcare staff, with a 12 percent rise in nurses, 10 percent in doctors, and 15 percent in other healthcare professionals.

Another notable trend is the expansion of the backpacker hostel market, which caters to young travelers seeking budget-friendly options. This segment will create jobs for hostel managers, event coordinators, and digital marketers, contributing an additional 5 percent to overall employment in tourism, said Alug.
