Indian equities began Tuesday’s session on a weaker footing, tracking global uncertainty linked to rising friction between the United States and Iran.

In early trade, the BSE Sensex declined by roughly 524 points to around 76,745, while the Nifty 50 slipped close to 170 points to hover near 23,949.

Losses were seen across several key sectors, including automobiles, banks, financial services, metals and consumer durables.

Shares of companies such as Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Tata Steel were among those under pressure.

On the other hand, defensive segments like IT and FMCG stocks recorded modest gains, helping to cushion the broader decline.

Investor anxiety also drove the India VIX above the 19 mark, signalling heightened market uncertainty.

Market participants pointed to escalating tensions in West Asia, particularly near the Strait of Hormuz, as a major trigger.

The region remains vital for global crude supply, and any disruption tends to push energy prices higher. Brent crude was trading above $112 per barrel, adding to inflationary concerns.

Analysts also flagged external headwinds such as rising US bond yields and weakness in the rupee, which has slipped towards Rs 95 per dollar, making foreign investor participation less favourable.

While recent domestic political developments briefly supported sentiment, experts believe global developments, quarterly earnings, and corporate outlooks will now guide markets.

Across global markets, Asian indices showed mixed movement, while US equities ended the previous session slightly lower, reinforcing the cautious mood among investors.
