India Develops First Indigenous MRI Machine For AIIMS Delhi

India has made a significant leap in medical technology by developing its first indigenous MRI machine, which will be installed at AIIMS Delhi for trials by October.

This move marks a key milestone in reducing the country’s reliance on imported medical devices, as 80-85% of current medical equipment comes from abroad.

The new MRI machine will support India’s goal of becoming more self-reliant in medical technology and reducing treatment costs.

Collaboration Between AIIMS And SAMEER

AIIMS Delhi and the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER), an autonomous research and development laboratory under the Department of Electronics, Government of India, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

This collaboration aims to install the 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner at AIIMS, a critical advancement in India’s medical infrastructure.

AIIMS Delhi Director Dr. M Srinivas emphasized the importance of this initiative and highlighted that India imports the majority of equipment used in critical care and diagnostics, including MRIs.

He stated, “80 to 90% of high-end medical equipment is imported, even though we have the best brains in the country. This initiative is about bringing the best equipment to India and creating solutions here. AIIMS is the ideal place to meet the country’s unmet needs and challenges.”

Government Support And Technological Advancements

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has played a key role in spearheading the development of two crucial healthcare technologies:

• The 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner, and
• A 6 MEV Linear Accelerator (LINAC)

SAMEER is carrying out the projects in collaboration with various institutes, including the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Trivandrum and Kolkata, the Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), and the Dayanand Sagar Institute (DSI).

The MRI scanner, used for non-invasive imaging to visualize soft tissues, and the Linear Accelerator, utilized for cancer treatment with high-energy X-rays or electrons, represent significant strides toward making India self-sufficient in medical technology.

Both projects have received financial backing from MeitY to promote import substitution and bolster India’s healthcare capabilities.

A Vision For Atmanirbhar Bharat

Dr. Srinivas added that this initiative is a step toward realizing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).

With the new MRI machine and other technologies, India aims to make advancements in healthcare while reducing dependence on foreign imports.

This move not only promises to improve the quality of healthcare services but also contributes to the country’s economic and technological growth.
