India and Italy signed a partnership agreement on mobility and migration for workers, students, and professionals

Following a lengthy and productive meeting with his counterpart Antonio Tajani, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar signed the ‘Mobility and Migration Partnership Agreement’ to allow seamless mobility of workers, students, and professionals.

Jaishankar is nearing the end of a four-day trip to Portugal and Italy.

“A comprehensive and productive meeting this evening with DPM & FM @Antonio_Tajani”, Jaishankar tweeted afterwards.

“Conversed about deepening our strategic partnership. Agreed that potential in agro-tech, innovation, space, defence and the digital domain should be explored”, he added in his tweet.

The two leaders discussed in depth the West Asian situation, the Ukraine conflict, and the Indo-Pacific panorama.

Dr Jaishankar stated, “Appreciated Italy’s support for our initiatives and also for the G20 Presidency”.

Dr Jaishankar went on to say, “Signed the Mobility and Migration Partnership Agreement and the Cultural Exchange Programme at the end of our talks”.

The Indian population in Italy estimated at 180,000 people, is Europe’s third largest after the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. The majority of first-generation migrants work in economic sectors such as agriculture, dairy farming, the leather industry, construction work, and the service industry.
