The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has issued a notification mandating air-conditioned truck cabins for all new trucks constructed on or after October 1, 2025.
According to a gazette notification, the vehicles manufactured on or after October 1, 2025, shall be fitted with an air-conditioning system for the cabin of vehicles of N2 and N3 categories.
“The testing of the cabin fitted with an air-conditioning system shall be as per IS14618:2022”, the statement reads.
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced in July that the draft notification mandating the installation of air-conditioning systems in truck cabins has been approved.
Recently, the minister stated that truck drivers play a significant part in the transportation sector, which is one of India’s most important sectors, and there is a need to address issues with their working conditions and mental health.
“Air-conditioned cabins for trucks will soon be made mandatory”, Gadkari continued.
Lamenting that truck drivers have been forced to work in extreme heat conditions, the minister stated that he has long advocated for air-conditioned cabins for truck drivers, despite some people objecting to it saying it will increase costs.
