Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani is Mumbai’s second-oldest public Ganapati and has remained a prominent part of the city’s Ganeshotsav celebrations.
The mandal traces its roots to Mumbai’s former textile districts, including Parel, Girgaon and Lalbaug, and carries forward the legacy of freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who helped transform Ganesh Chaturthi into a public festival in the 1890s.
This year, the celebrations draw inspiration from South Indian temple architecture.
The idol features Lord Venkateshwara Balaji of Tirumala Tirupati, along with traditional motifs including the Garuda, Keertimukh, Shankha, Chakra and camphor Tilak.
The grand pandal recreates the architectural splendour of the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Hyderabad and Bhuvanagiri, featuring towering gopurams, deepastambhas and sculpted yali guardian figures.
Mill workers played a significant role in the festival’s early celebrations.
Despite the 1982 mill strike and subsequent urban transformation, Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani has continued to serve as a cultural anchor for the neighbourhood.
Since 1939, the celebrations have taken place beside the eastern side of Chinchpokli railway station, with the Chinchpokli Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal organising the annual Ganeshotsav.
The mandal has expanded its work beyond the festival, with nearly 5,000 contributors supporting initiatives such as blood donation camps, healthcare services and programmes for children and education.
