The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) registered a record 2.18 million net formal jobs in June 2025, the highest since payroll tracking commenced in April 2018, according to provisional data released by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Wednesday.
This marked an 8.9% increase compared with May 2025, when 2.01 million net formal jobs were added.
On a year-on-year basis, the growth was even more significant, rising 12.9% from 1.93 million net new jobs created in June 2024.
The data showed that 1.06 million new subscribers enrolled in June 2025, a 12.6% increase from May and 3.61% higher year-on-year. Of these, 60.2% were aged between 18 and 25 years, reflecting the continued dominance of first-time job seekers.
In June, this age group added approximately 0.97 million jobs, registering 11.4% growth over May 2025 and a 12.15% increase compared with June 2024.
The ministry noted that this surge highlights ‘growing employment opportunities and increasing awareness of employee benefits’.
The report also revealed that around 1.69 million members exited and subsequently re-joined EPFO in June 2025, representing a 19.6% rise over June 2024.
These members typically switched jobs but opted to transfer their funds rather than withdraw them, thereby preserving their long-term financial security.
EPFO’s payroll data further showed that in June, it added 0.47 million net female members, including 0.30 million new subscribers.
Net female additions rose by 10.3% compared with June 2024, while new enrolments increased by 1.34%.
The ministry said this growth reflects a positive shift towards greater inclusion and diversity in the workforce.
A state-level breakdown showed that Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana each contributed more than 5% of the total net additions.
Maharashtra led the chart, accounting for 20.03% of new payrolls. Together, the top five states and union territories represented 61.5% of the overall growth, adding 1.35 million jobs.
On the industry front, education, expert services, construction, and higher education establishments recorded notable increases.
Since April 2018, EPFO has been releasing monthly payroll data covering employment trends from September 2017 onwards. The data is provisional, with updates continuing as employee records are verified.
The latest figures not only mark a milestone in formal job creation but also highlight India’s evolving workforce, driven largely by its youth and increasing female participation.
