A senior AAI official stated on Monday that commercial flights are due to restart at Birsi airport on December 1 when budget carrier IndiGo launches a daily service connecting the city with Hyderabad.
The Gurugram-based airline is expected to announce the start of the ticket sale for its new route, according to Gondia Airport Director Shafique U Shah of the AAI (Airports Authority of India).
Commercial flight services from Gondia Airport were suspended in August of last year, five months after its launch, when regional carrier Fly Big ceased operation.
“Flight operations will resume from Gondia airport in December. IndiGo will be commencing its daily flight services between Gondia and Hyderabad from December 1”, Shah continued.
Fly Big, a subsidiary of Gurugram-based Big Charter Private Ltd, began passenger flights from Birsi to Indore and Hyderabad on March 13 as part of the central government’s regional connectivity initiative UDAAN.
However, five months after operations began, the airline pulled out of the route for undisclosed reasons, and the airport has not had any commercial flights since.
