Closing Bell: Benchmark indices ended in the green territory

Closing Bell: Benchmark indices ended in the green territory with BSE Sensex rising 126.41 points to 61,294.20 and NSE Nifty climbing 35.10 points, settling at 18,232.55. Most of the broader market indices ended in the green.

Nifty Next 50 rose 0.42 per cent, Nifty Midcap 50 climbed 0.21 per cent, Nifty Large Midcap 250 advanced 0.21 per cent and Nifty Total market ended 0.23 per cent higher. In the sectoral indices Nifty Bank rose 0.58 per cent; Nifty IT climbed 0.76 per cent while Nifty FMCG fell 0.38 per cent.

Gains in financial services and IT shares led the headline indices higher. Shares of oil companies are in focus as government announces hike in windfall tax. It is expected to add 6,000 barrels of crude oil per day to ONGC’s production in the coming days.

India has raised windfall tax on petroleum, crude oil, and aviation turbine fuel. It raised the windfall tax on crude oil to Rs 2,100 ($25.38) per tonne from Rs 1,700 ($20.55), effective on Tuesday.

Crude holds steady amid COVID flare-ups in China, brent near $85/bbl. Natural gas is trading 7.64 per cent lower at 345.80.

Brent crude March futures declined 0.35 per cent to $85.61 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures dropped 0.30 per cent to $80.02 a barrel.

Indian rupee closed 15 paise lower at 82.89 per dollar against previous close of 82.74.

Gold prices jumped 1 per cent to a six-month high on Tuesday on technical trading, while investors looked forward to minutes from the U.S. Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting for more cues on its rate-hike path.

Spot gold was up 1 per cent to $1,841.99 per ounce in thin trading. U.S. gold futures rose 1.2 per cent to $1,847.70 per ounce.

Asian and US stock markets

Closing Bell: SGX Nifty ended with loss of 0.08 per cent at 18,291.50.

China, Hang Seng ended with the gain of 1.84 per cent at 20,145.29. Taiwan Weighted ended with the gain of 0.61 per cent at 14,224.12.

South korea, Kospi ended0.31 per cent lower at 2,218.69. Shanghai Composite ended with the gain of 0.88 per cent at 3,116.51.

The US stock market remained closed on Monday.

Foreign institutional investors (FII) sold shares worth a net Rs 212.57 crore while domestic institutional investors (DII) purchased shares worth a net Rs 743.35 crore on Monday, January 2, 2023, according to the data available on NSE.
