Ambuja Cements Limited, a prominent entity within the Adani Group, has become the world’s first cement manufacturer to join the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization (AFID).
This global alliance unites companies across various industries to expedite the transition to Net Zero, in alignment with the Paris Agreement.
Ambuja’s inclusion in AFID marks a significant milestone in its sustainability journey and sets a new benchmark for the cement industry.
Ambuja Cements, known for its operations in the energy-intensive cement sector, has set a target to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050.
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has however validated this commitment with targets.
As part of its green energy strategy, Ambuja plans to invest INR 100 billion in renewable energy projects, including 1 GW of renewable energy capacity and 376 MW from Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS).
By FY2028, the company however aims to power 60% of its expanded capacity with green energy.
In FY’24, Ambuja utilized over 8.6 million tonnes of waste-derived resources and achieved a notable 11x water-positive and 8x plastic-negative status.
Karan Adani, Non-Executive Director of Ambuja Cements, highlighted the importance of this milestone, stating, “Joining the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization represents a significant advancement in our sustainability efforts. We are already among the lowest emission intensity cement producers globally and are committed to reducing our GHG emissions further. Membership in AFID will enable us to exchange insights with global industry peers and share our decarbonization strategies.”
Meanwhile, AFID’s mission is to foster industry-level dialogue and enhance cooperation to help companies develop robust decarbonization strategies that support their countries’ climate commitments.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) coordinates the alliance’s activities.
Ambuja Cements Limited is a leading cement producer in India and a key member of the Adani Group, a major player in diversified sustainable businesses.
With subsidiaries ACC Ltd and Sanghi Industries Ltd, Ambuja’s cement capacity has reached 78.9 MTPA, supported by 18 integrated manufacturing plants and 19 grinding units across the country.
Meanwhile, the company is likely to acquire Penna Cement Industries Limited, adding 14 MTPA to its capacity.

Meanwhile, the company’s innovations include a captive port with six terminals and products listed in the GRIHA catalogue, designed to reduce carbon footprints.
CDP has awarded Ambuja a Leadership Score of A- for its contributions to inclusive growth and climate change mitigation.
The Alliance for Industry Decarbonization is dedicated to decarbonizing industrial value chains and advancing net-zero goals in line with the Paris Agreement.
The alliance however includes a diverse group of private and public organizations and stakeholders from energy-intensive sectors, committed to collaborating towards a sustainable future.
