India’s financial inclusion framework is undergoing rapid transformation as Artificial Intelligence-driven credit systems begin reshaping the lending ecosystem.
The government on Wednesday stated that AI-led credit models could unlock an estimated economic value of nearly $130-170 billion while reducing dependence on informal borrowing channels.
Officials said advanced AI systems, combined with consent-based financial data sharing, can significantly improve risk assessment and strengthen formal access to lending for MSMEs, rural communities, informal workers, and women-led enterprises.
The government highlighted the Unified Lending Interface (ULI) as a major catalyst in this transformation.
Nearly 64 lenders, including 41 banks and 23 NBFCs, have already joined the platform.
AI-enabled models analyse digital footprints through ULI to streamline credit assessments.
The technology-based framework integrates authentication services, land records, satellite inputs, and multiple financial datasets to accelerate loan approvals and improve accessibility.
Authorities also confirmed that ULI is expanding towards Regional Rural Banks and District Central Co-operative Banks to improve lending penetration in rural and semi-urban regions.
The Reserve Bank of India’s Account Aggregator framework further supports this ecosystem by enabling secure and consent-driven financial data sharing across institutions.
Officials noted that more than 2.6 billion accounts are now enabled for data-sharing, while nearly 252.9 million users have linked accounts within the framework.
The government additionally highlighted the role of Jan Dhan accounts, Aadhaar integration, expanding 5G connectivity, and the Digital India BHASHINI initiative in strengthening multilingual financial access nationwide.
