The Vizhinjam Port, a flagship project of the Adani Group and India’s premier trans-shipment hub near Kovalam Beach in Kerala, celebrated a significant milestone with the arrival of its first mothership on Thursday.

The vessel, ‘San Fernando’ of Maersk Line, one of the world’s largest shipping companies, made history carrying over 2,000 containers.

The vessel received a traditional water salute upon successfully berthing at the port.

This momentous event positions Vizhinjam Port prominently in the global maritime sector, expected to rank among the top ports worldwide.

State Ports Minister V.N. Vasavan, Adani Port officials, and senior state government representatives attended the arrival ceremony.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd (APSEZ) Managing Director Karan Adani will grace the formal inauguration proceedings scheduled for Friday.

Following the official inauguration, ‘San Fernando’ will proceed to Colombo, marking the start of regular cargo operations.

The port’s first phase completion, boasting a 3,000-meter breakwater and 800-meter container berth, underscores its readiness for full commercial operations in the coming months.

Vizhinjam Port however stands out as India’s first semi-automated container terminal and a future global bunkering hub for clean fuels like hydrogen and ammonia.

Meanwhile, the ongoing project aims for full operational readiness by 2028, emphasizing sustainability and efficiency in global trade routes linking Europe, the Persian Gulf, and the Far East.
