Kutch Copper Ltd, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Ltd, plans to integrate 115 megawatts of renewable energy into its operations at Mundra, Gujarat, as part of efforts to reduce emissions and improve resource efficiency.

In its first sustainability report, the company outlined measures to strengthen its environmental, social and governance practices as demand for copper grows alongside investments in clean energy, electric mobility, power transmission and industrial development.

The company currently operates a copper smelter with an annual capacity of 500,000 tonnes and plans to expand it to one million tonnes.

According to Kutch Copper, the expansion would make the facility the world’s largest single-location custom smelter.

Renewable energy integration forms a key part of its long-term decarbonisation strategy, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of its operations.

The company said it uses nearly 100 per cent desalinated water and follows a zero-liquid-discharge system to conserve freshwater and manage industrial wastewater. It reported treating 99.8 per cent of its sulphur emissions, attributing this performance to advanced environmental technologies and pollution-control measures.

Copper remains essential to electrification and clean energy infrastructure, including renewable power systems and electricity transmission networks. Its role is expected to grow as countries transition towards lower-carbon economies.

Beyond its industrial operations, Kutch Copper, however, supports community initiatives in healthcare, education, livelihood opportunities and social development.

The Adani Group has committed USD 1.2 billion to the project, according to the company.

The group views domestic copper production as an important contributor to India’s green infrastructure expansion and its target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Through renewable energy adoption, improved water management and expanded production, Kutch Copper aims to align industrial growth with environmental management and long-term sustainability goals.
