Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) and MSC Group’s terminal operating arm, Terminal Investment Limited (TiL), have entered into a definitive agreement under which TiL will acquire a 49% stake in Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited (AVPPL).

The transaction, valued at USD 2.85 billion, represents the largest foreign private investment in Indian port infrastructure and is subject to customary regulatory approvals.

As part of the agreement, TiL will invest USD 1.397 billion, reflecting its 49% share of the total transaction value.

The partnership marks the third major collaboration between APSEZ and MSC after their successful joint ventures at Mundra Container Terminal No 3 and Ennore.

Commissioned in December 2024, Vizhinjam is India’s first deep-draft mega transshipment port with an existing capacity of 1.6 million TEUs.

Ongoing expansion works will increase its handling capacity by more than three times to 5.7 million TEUs by December 2028.

Strategically located approximately 10 nautical miles from the East-West international shipping route, the port features advanced automated cargo-handling systems, artificial intelligence-enabled vessel traffic management, and modern container infrastructure designed to improve operational efficiency.

The collaboration is expected to provide APSEZ with greater cargo volume visibility, accelerate the port’s growth, strengthen access to cargo in Bangladesh, expand its presence on East African trade routes, and increase relay cargo volumes.

APSEZ Whole-time Director and Chief Executive Officer Ashwani Gupta said the partnership would enhance global supply chain efficiency and also improve India’s connectivity with key international markets.

Vizhinjam’s Rapid Growth

Vizhinjam has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing container ports.

During FY26, it handled 1.3 million TEUs and surpassed 2 million TEUs within just 18 months of operations, becoming the first Indian port to achieve the milestone in such a short period.

In June 2026, the port also welcomed its 1,000th vessel, reinforcing its position as a rapidly emerging transshipment gateway in the Indian Ocean region.
