Adani Hydro Energy Eleven Ltd, a subsidiary of Adani Green Energy, will develop the 2,250 MW Gandikota-2 Pumped Storage Project in Andhra Pradesh’s YSR Kadapa district.
The Andhra Pradesh government approved the project as part of its broader strategy to strengthen renewable energy infrastructure and position the state as a major clean energy and energy storage hub.
The State Investment Promotion Board, chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, cleared the project under the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024.
Authorities plan to develop the project at the Lord Balaji Donthi Kona PSP Park in YSR Kadapa district.
Officials said the Gandikota-2 project would become one of the country’s largest pumped storage facilities and support Andhra Pradesh’s growing ecosystem of renewable energy, green hydrogen, electric mobility, advanced manufacturing and AI-driven data centres.
Pumped storage projects play a critical role in renewable-heavy power systems by storing excess solar and wind energy during off-peak hours and supplying electricity during periods of high demand.
Experts view pumped storage projects as vital for a stable, round-the-clock clean energy supply. India is rapidly expanding such capacity, with Andhra Pradesh emerging as a major hub.
Adani Group has expanded its pumped storage projects across Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh as part of its renewable energy strategy.
The Andhra Pradesh government also approved water allocation and incentives for the project under the Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024, which targets investments of nearly ₹10 lakh crore and aims to create around 7.5 lakh jobs.
Officials said policy stability, faster approvals and strong transmission planning continue to attract major clean energy investments to the state.
Authorities, however, expect to complete the Gandikota-2 project within 72 months.
