Opposition in Indian Parliament

Clueless Opposition: India witnesses huge hue and cry in the Parliament but the direction and intent looks pointless when we talk about the role of the opposition in the House.

Looking at the debate in the Parliament, it seems that there are no arrows in the quiver of our opposition. He is busy spinning the empty quirk on the ruling party. Congress President Sonia Gandhi first attacked Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar and then there was an uproar in the Lok Sabha over the Tawang encounter.

Clueless Opposition: In both these cases, if the opposition wanted, it could have started a serious debate in the Parliament, which would have benefited the country. The public would also know to what extent what the Vice President has said about the coordination between the judiciary and the executive is correct.

Clueless Opposition with Collegium System improvement

Jagdeep Dhankhar talks about improving the present ‘Collegium’ system regarding the appointment of judges. He did not say anything about the curtailment or neglect of the rights of the judiciary. He emphasizes on the element of necessary balance and co-operation between the Judiciary, Legislature and Executive in a healthy parliamentary democracy.

Huge hue and cry over Tawang issue

Apart from this, as the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, he had asked Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Minister Piyush Goyal that instead of openly attacking each other in the House, they should come to his room and talk about the encounter in Tawang. Humble appeal also turned down. The opposition had stalled the proceedings of the Lok Sabha on the issue of Tawang.

Demand of the open debate on the sensitive issue

The Congress demands that there should be an open debate on the ‘beating’ of Indian soldiers on the Tawang issue. The use of this word for our brave soldiers is absolutely inappropriate. The use of such words without proof only brings down the reputation of its speaker. Was the minor skirmish between Indian and Chinese soldiers in Tawang worth wasting several hours of our Parliament? Such military skirmishes happen frequently in the border areas.

Border clash is not an strange phenomenon

Such skirmishes do not happen only on Indo-China and Indo-Pak borders, they happen on the borders of neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal. What is the point of making big hue and cry over it? Maybe that’s why our opposition neither has any big policy nor any leader! If the Tawang encounter was serious, then why would the Corps Commanders of India and China have talked peacefully two days back sitting in the Chushul-Moldo border camp?

A no-issue should not be made an issue

Both sides agreed that they would resolve all issues through dialogue. Even on the Galvan Valley dispute in 2020, the attitude of both the sides was harmonious. There are occasional skirmishes on the border with China, but let us not forget that India’s trade with it is also increasing. What does our opposition want? Should we forcefully ope for a fight with China? Congress may not want this but it definitely wants to pull the legs of the Modi government in any way. That is why it is bent on making a non-issue an issue.
