According to US media, Matthew Perry, the problematic actor in the hugely popular TV sitcom “Friends,” was discovered dead at his Los Angeles home on Saturday. 54 was his age. Law enforcement officials informed the Los Angeles Times that first responders discovered Perry unresponsive in a hot tub at his home and were unable to resuscitate him.
“At 4:10 p.m., we replied… A Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman told AFP, “It is a death investigation for a male in his 50s,” without providing the victim’s identity.
A representative for the fire department said that it had dealt with a “water emergency,” which might have involved a “pool, spa, bathtub, or fountain,” but he was unable to corroborate claims that Perry had perished.
The role that made Perry most famous was that of the witty Chandler Bing on the enormously popular television series “Friends,” which aired for ten seasons between 1994 and 2004.
The television series “Friends” followed six New Yorkers as they navigated adulthood, relationships, and careers. It had a sizable global audience and was a regular on NBC’s greatly lauded television lineup in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Perry struggled for years with alcohol and painkiller addiction during the height of his popularity, frequently visiting rehab centers.
Due to his drug use, Perry had health issues in 2018, including a burst colon that necessitated many operations and the use of a colostomy bag for several months.
In his autobiography “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” which was released last year, Perry talked about repeatedly going through detox and spending millions of dollars on attempts to become clean.
“All of the sufferers out there,” Perry dedicated the book to, and stated in the preface, “I should be dead.”
