Ashneer Grover's Perspective
The suggestion by Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy that young IT workers should commit to a 70-hour workweek has stirred controversy, with many expressing their opinions on the matter. In response, BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover emphasized that the outrage might stem from the fact that work is still being evaluated based on “hours” rather than “outcome.”
I think junta got offended here because work is still being measured in ‘hours’ than ‘outcome’. The other thing is people feeling as if youngster’s laziness is only thing keeping India from becoming developed.
Funny – getting offended unites us more than cricket, religion,… https://t.co/hAai4UOgwU

Social media users shared their perspectives on the issue, with some fearing that such suggestions might normalize excessively long work hours. The divide in perspective between business owners and employees was also highlighted, with owners often seeking round-the-clock dedication while employees aim for standard working hours due to varying income levels.

Narayana Murthy, in a podcast with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai, argued that India’s work productivity is among the lowest globally. He called on India’s youth to work extra hours, drawing parallels to the post-World War II efforts of Japan and Germany. He also pointed out challenges related to government corruption and bureaucratic delays, emphasizing that improving work productivity and reducing corruption and bureaucracy delays are vital for India to compete with rapidly progressing nations.
Totally agree with Mr Murthy’s views. It’s not our moment to work less and entertain ourselves. Rather it’s our moment to go all in and build in 1 generation what other countries have built over many generations! https://t.co/KsXQbjAhSM

Support for Mr. Murthy’s statement came from Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal, who agreed with the need for increased dedication and hard work. JSW Chairman Sajjan Jindal also endorsed the idea, emphasizing the importance of making India an economic superpower. This issue has sparked a significant debate about work ethics, productivity, and the balance between work and personal life.
