As Typhoon Koinu approaches the southern province of Guangdong and the Island of Hainan, China issued a warning of big waves, heavy rain, and strong winds.
The storm was anticipated to cause waves of up to nine metres in the South China Sea on Saturday and Sunday, according to the State Oceanic Administration, which issued an orange alert, the second highest in a four-colored warning system.
As per the National Meteorological Centre, Koinu, which means ‘puppy’ in Japanese, is moving west along China’s southern coast at a speed of 5-10 kph.
From late Monday, it is anticipated to deteriorate into a powerful tropical storm.
Koinu had killed one person and injured almost 400 others in Taiwan, wreaking the most havoc on remote Orchid Island off the island’s east coast.
